He was one of the co-founders of the Working Group for Fish Species and Water Protection in Northern Germany (AFGN). With the passing of Günter Brüning, the migratory fish community in Northern Germany has lost one of its most visionary and constructive minds.

In 1978, salmon were released in Germany for the first time since the extinction of this iconic species. The initiator was Günter Brüning. Many claim that he was far ahead of his time in many respects. As president of the LFV Weser-Ems, spokesperson for the AFGN, and founding member of the NASF Germany, he was active in many ways, even far beyond his home town of Oldenburg.
