This kind of taggings can be attached on the outside of fish as well as inserted into the fish. They are able to log environmental data for a certain time span.  Data like water depth,  temperature, GPS- position and many more can be recorded. To read out the recorded data the fish has to be caught again or the data-logger has to be retrieved.
