Water Pollution

The water pollution in rivers with industrial and domestic waste in Germany has been clearly decreased within the last decades.

The discharge of phosphate from wastewater treatment plants has also been greatly reduced.

Particularly for salmon water pollution is no longer the bottleneck for resettlement.

Problems today are for example medical residues in waste water being endocrine disrupters. In some rivers high rates of silt sedimentation due to land erosion and high nitrogen discharges from agricultural activities lead to a destruction of spawning habitats. Fish species like salmon and trout are strongly dependent on functioning gravel beds for reproduction.
