Migratory Fishes

North Sea houting (Coregonus oxyrinchus)

As a relative to the European Whitefish, the "North Sea Houting" (Coregonus oxyrinchus) also belongs to the Salmonids.

It lives in the Sea and migrates into the rivers in November for spawning on hard bottom gravelbeds.

Unlike the "Baltic Houting" (Coregonus maraena), this species had to be regarded as extinct in German waters.

Starting from a small residual population in River Videau the species has been reintroduced to Schleswig-Holstein, Lower Saxony and at last also to the Rhine area.

This fish species is particularily sensitive to migration obstacles. Even small weirs with a comparatively low step in the riverbed may impede the migration of houting.
