As a relative of whitefish, vendace, and grayling, the houting (Coregonus oxyrinchus) also belongs to the salmon family.
It lives in the sea and migrates to rivers in November to spawn on gravelly, hard ground.
© Stefan LudwigUnlike the Baltic whitefish (Coregonus maraena), this fish species was considered extinct.
However, based on a small remnant population in the Videau, the species was reintroduced in Schleswig-Holstein, Denmark, Lower Saxony, and most recently in the Rhine region.
© Stefan LudwigThis fish species is particularly sensitive to migration barriers – even small drops in the riverbed can
prevent whitefish from migrating.
